Grassroots Women Monitor Progress of UN Women

The Huairou Commission (HC), as a member of the GEAR Campaign (Gender Equality Architecture Reform), is proud to be a supporter of the development of UN Women and particularly pleased with the commitment Michelle Bachelet has made to the involvement of grassroots women throughout the world. We understand that creating an agency that addresses all women's interests and needs equitably is an immense undertaking, and we are dedicated to doing our part to support its ongoing evolution.

The upcoming 56th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women provides an important opportunity for women to come together and assess the progress that has been made so far in the implementation of UN Women's programs, and to review how consultative, advisory, and partnership strategies are taking shape on the ground in different countries across the world.  The Huairou Commission particularly believes that the advancement of UN Women depends greatly on its accessibility to and involvement of women at the grassroots level. Further, it is the responsibility of civil society and other organizations to monitor and evaluate the implementation of its programs at global, national and regional offices as well as the structure for facilitating involvement with civil society.

To initiate a process of reflection in preparation for the CSW, the Huairou Commission is distributing questionnaires to our CSW delegation and other HC members and supporters. This questionnaire is designed to assess the responsiveness of local UN Women offices in engaging with their constituencies. We encourage everyone in our global network to review the status of UN Women in their own contexts, particularly in terms of consultative, advisory, and partnership strategy implementation, in order to come to the CSW prepared to engage in a productive dialogue with national governments.

The Huairou Commission looks forward to the CSW as an opportunity for women to participate in strengthening a credible international agency that makes a difference in the lives of women worldwide and to take seriously our responsibility to shape it into the kind of global women's agency we want it to be.
